Tips for Choosing the Right Planters for Residential and Commercial Use

Choosing the right planter is crucial for the health and growth of your plants. In this article, we’ll give you valuable tips on how to select and design the perfect planter for your plants.

1. Consider the interior dimensions of the planters

The interior dimensions of a planter are particularly important, as they determine the space available for your plants’ roots. Make sure the planter offers enough room for the roots to grow. We provide both the exterior and interior dimensions of all planters so you can select the ideal size. You’ll find this information in the product listing under “Dimensions / Technical Specifications.” If you’re unsure, it’s best to consult a gardener to ensure the planter offers enough space for the roots of the plants you want.

2. Single-walled planters

Single-walled “E” planters offer several advantages, especially for indoor and outdoor use:

  • Larger interior volume for better planting and more space for the roots.
  • They can also be used as planters, giving you flexibility in your design.
  • Suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
  • These planters are especially ideal if you need plenty of space for your plants’ roots and are looking for a versatile solution.

3. Double-walled planters

Double-walled “D” planters are characterized by their high stability and insulating properties. They are also suitable for both indoor and outdoor use:

  • Optional irrigation system (depending on the model) that ensures a consistent water supply.
  • Structurally very stable and resistant to external influences.
  • Limited protection against moderate frost: They offer some protection for the soil and roots, but not against very severe frost.
  • Illuminated planters are always manufactured with double walls to integrate the lighting and the plants.

4. Illuminated and Non-Illuminated Planters

Illuminated planters have a shallower planting depth than non-illuminated models due to the built-in light source. This can have a negative effect on the plants if the planter is not properly protected from the cold in winter. Without adequate frost protection, the soil can freeze solid and the plants may die.

An exception to this are larger, illuminated planters, which can be equipped with a container insert upon request. This significantly increases the planting depth and provides the plants with more room to grow.

5. Indoor and Outdoor Use

  • The unlit planters made of polyethylene by Serralunga and Vondom are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. They are easy to maintain, durable, and can easily withstand temperatures ranging from -60°C to +80°C.
  • Tuuci’s aluminum planters, available with or without trellises, are ideal as privacy screens for patios, restaurants, and hotels.
  • Illuminated planters from Serralunga and Vondom feature closable drainage holes and integrated irrigation systems.
  • Unlit polyethylene planters are shipped without a drainage hole. A drainage hole can be added later using a drill—please do not use a knife!
  • Painted planters from Vondom are only suitable for outdoor use to a limited extent. Temperature fluctuations can cause hairline cracks and chipping of the paint.

6. Frost Protection and Winter Care

Neither single-walled nor double-walled planters offer complete protection against extreme frost. To protect your plants in winter:

  • Winter-hardy plants should be wrapped in non-woven fabric, coconut mats, or bubble wrap to prevent the soil from freezing through.
